Dapur Mama, Hamburg

16:00 - 19:00

Speaker: Prof. em. Dr. Henry Spiller

Professor Emeritus in Etnomusicology

Department of Music, UC Davis

The distinguished ethnomusicologist Henry Spiller, Emeritus Professor at the University of California Davis, shares his work on music and performance, particularly gamelan, at the Java Village of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

The event is organized in conjunction with another event series taking place the following day, which focuses on a similar and closely related event: the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. (See the temporary page of the event here.) The same organizer of the Java Village in Chicago had previously organized a Java Village in Paris and, as was until recently little known to the public and in historical accounts, donated the gamelan performed there to the then Ethnographic Museum in Hamburg in 1890. The event series consists of two lectures addressing the musical impact of gamelan in Paris and its colonial context, as well as a concert.

Henry Spiller, who happens to be in Hamburg during the weekend of the event series, will contribute by further contextualizing these historical presentations of Java, focusing primarily on the Chicago chapter.
